What Are Claude Skills? A Plain-English Guide for Business Owners

If you run a trades business, an online store, or an agency, you've probably heard the word "AI" more times this year than you'd like. Most of it is noise. One recent idea is worth ten minutes of your attention though, because it changes how much use AI is to a business like yours: Skills.

The problem Skills solve

Out of the box, an AI assistant is a generalist. Ask it to draft a follow-up email and you'll get something serviceable. What you won't get is your tone, your pricing rules, or the particular way your team chases a lead that's gone quiet. You know all of that. The assistant doesn't, and it won't remember after you explain it.

So you explain it again the next time. And the time after that.

A Skill is that context written down once: the instructions, a few worked examples, the steps your team actually follows. The assistant reaches for it whenever it's relevant, without being asked.

Two examples that make it concrete

A bookkeeping Skill. Rather than asking an AI to "help categorise this expense" and hoping it lands on the right account, you write down your chart of accounts, your GST rules, and how you like receipts formatted. Every answer then follows your rules instead of a reasonable guess at them.

A customer follow-up Skill. A trades business usually has a particular way of chasing an unpaid quote. Polite on day three. Firmer by day ten. Job reference number in every message, because leaving it out means someone has to go looking. Written down as a Skill, that sequence runs the same way every time, in your words.

Why this matters more than it sounds like it should

The gap between AI that sounds impressive and AI that earns its keep is almost always this. Not reasoning ability. Context.

A generic chatbot gives you a plausible answer. A system that knows your accounts, your prices and your sequence gives you the right one, on a Tuesday, without supervision. That difference is what we spend our build-days closing.
